8 June 09- The Battle on the Border has been run and won, and what a weekend it was. From Saturday morning's Time Trial through Saturday and Sunday's Road Races and Sunday's Criterium around a new course at Salt, the racing was unrelenting and made all the more watchable as Foghorn Lukehorn did an eminent job of commentating throughout the whole event. Full results on all stages and the overall results can be viewed HERE

There was a lot of class on display with competitors from all over the nation attending, and the Goldstars strip was worn with pride by many of our members.

The 8 km Time Trial saw Under 17 Ace, Jesse Kerrison, post the fastest time of any Goldstars member with a time of 12'23.93" with Mik Matravoelgyi (Elite B) ride the second fastest at 12'48.38". Jesse won everything, except the Time Trial where he placed second to take GC in U17 by almost a minute over second placegetter, Nick Schultz of the Sunshine Coast.

Emily Roper, one of the two Under 17 Women riding with the Elite B & C Women, showed her class by coming fourth in the Time Trial less than a minute behind the best time and eventual Tour winner in that category, Melissa Rollinson, all on her restricted gearing. Emily went on to place second and third in the Road Races and won the Criterium to place second in overall GC, 1'35" ahead of third in GC.

And, what about Troy Bayliss? Riding his Ducati shod with full carbon Lightweights, Troy placed 7th overall GC in Masters A, 1'43" off the winning accumulated time after placing second in the Criterium mastering the technical corners as he has so often done on his powered Ducati. Nick Gates did give him a pep talk before the Crit and imparted some of his accumulated knowledge.

John Murazac's Tour started badly when he punctured in the first 300 metres of the Time Trial and was awarded equal slowest time, but he kept on and completed all stages. Mik Matravoelgyi, on the finish to Stage 3 which consisted of a sharp right turn coming off the Tumbulgum Bridge leading into the finish straight, came down with three other riders in the break of about a dozen. Mik contested the Crit the following day.

Michael Cooper in Elite B placed third in the Stage 2 Road Race after surviving the Tumbulgum Bridge corner.

Other members who survived the Battle and came out the other end were Luke Rich, Peter Spencer, Jackson Wardrop (who placed 5th in the Stage 3 Road Race), Andrew McPhan, Andre Clayden, Ryan MacAnallay and Kirsty Wright.

QLD State Criterium Championships 2009

Sunday, 26 April 2009 20:53    Written by Rob Craig  Results HERE

What a great day for results for Gold Coast riders! Racing produced no less than five Gold Medals to Gold Coast riders in 13 races.

I have to apologise up front for not seeing some of the earlier racing in the day. I did however manage to arrive just as Dave Boe (Goldstars) powering away to chase down and roll over the top of the race leader who had been away for two laps. Dave rode away to a solo 1st place finish and Greg Sands (Goldstars) finished strong to take 3rd place in the Masters 5 race. Gary Muharen (Gold Coast CATS)  and defending champion from last year Peter Flynn (Goldstars) also rode in this race. The riding was hard as the finishing straight was once again straight into a string head wind that made it difficult for riders to get away all day long.

Julie Barnett (Goldstars) took 2nd place in the Women's Masters 4, Sally Smalley (Gold Coast CATS) took out 1st place in the Women's Masters 2 race. Rob Driver (Gold Coast CATS) also took out 2nd place in the Men's Masters 7 race. Congratulations to you all - excellent results.

I apologise to any other riders who placed earlier in the day as I do not have any details on your rides.

Men's Masters 4 was a hotly contested battle of attrition as the wind and pace took its toll on riders. As the head wind battered them the tail wind through the bends pushed the pace up so much that riders were searching for extra gears that they didn't have. Defending champion Craig Taylor (Ipswich) and last years runner up Andre Claydon (Goldstars) looked dominant early on but again he wind kept the bunch intact. Kevin Menz (Balmoral) had a charge towards the end of the race but was brought back and rolled over by the bunch. Pat Goddard (Gold Coast CATS) was one of the casualties of the pace and retired just before the 3 laps to go mark.

Men's Masters 3 saw Dave Costanzo (Murwillumbah) and Peter Richards (Balmoral) hit the peloton hard from the gun. The tactic forced the pace in the first 10 minutes and ensured a lively race. Unfortunately a crash occurred on the far end of the back straight which saw two riders taken to hospital with head injuries (bad concussions). Dave rode hard on the front pulling back breaks all day and leading the main field around the circuit. A break in the last lap saw the main bunch scramble for the line in a sprint. Dave had worked too hard on the front and was disappointed with his result after having ridden an aggressive race.

Men's Masters 2 saw a strong field line up for a tough race. Nathen Berghammer (Gold Coast CATS Club Captain) and Luke Lucas (Murwillumbah) both featured chasing down breaks and staying in the top third of the field for most of the race. Richard Mier (Gold Coast CATS) stayed with the bunch in his first QLD champs and rode well all day. Sprinters John Murazak (Goldstars - 2nd place 2008) and Peter Duncan (Goldstars) put in big sprints in the end with a large field chasing for the line but were both boxed in. The race was won strongly by Andrew Gerber (Ffast) showing his current form.

Elite Women saw three Goldstars riders - Kirsty Wright, Samantha Hogan and Loren Rowney (recently recovering from illness) competing against some very strong riders. Liz Young, Amy Schramm, Kirsty Broun and Sally Robins. A number of the Lifecycle girls (Marselletes) had recently returned from winning the Tour of China and rode well. The breaks were not abel to get away and it came down to a bunch sprint. All of the Gold Coast girls finished the race with a number of them finishing ahead of some of the bigger names. I believe the race was won by
Kirsty Broun.

The Mens Under 23 saw a small field of 12 riders start. This quickly dropped down to 8 riders as the others were promptly shelled in the wind and the pace on the back straight. Malcolm Rudolph (Fraser Coast) and James Hepburn (Victor Broncos) were closely watched as it became evident it would become a sprinters race at the end. Rueben Donati (Randwick Botany - formerly with Byron Bay Freewheelers) rode well to keep all the riders in sight. The last few laps turned into a match sprint as the riders slowed the pace right down and started foxing each other. On the homeward straight Jackson Wardrop (Goldstars) lead he field home with a huge kick which looked to be carrying him home but Kyle Bateson (Gold Coast CATS) used it to roll over and take 1st place with Jackson holding on to take 4th place.

The Elite Men's  race saw three large team contingents line up with riders from Teschner-Fusion, Budget Forklifts, and Team Merida showing dominant numbers in the group. Again the wind kept the bunch together for much of the day but the race was peppered with attacks which showed the strength of Darren Rolfe as he continually tried to break free from the peloton. Shane Foley (Goldstars), Peter Spencer (Goldstars) and Jared Rowney (Ffast) all had attempts with breaks trying to stay away. With three laps to go the peloton slowed as the sprinters tried to start organising and Michael Hosking (Gold Coast CATS) powered away from the field. This caused chaos within the teams as the lead riders chased after him and abandoned any support they were trying to organise. Jared Rowney sat near the front of the chasing bunch which had rolled over Michael Hosking until the finishing straight and powered on as Peter Spencer held his wheel and jumped over him to take 1st place and the Queensland Title.

Congratulations to all riders who raced today and best wishes for the coming season.

Also, best of luck to Peter Spencer, Michael Hosking, and Jared Rowney who are heading down to Canberra next week for races in the National Road Series.

ANZAC 25
- Lakeside
25th April 2009,
Co-ordinates were given by General Andre Bondeson to Goldstars Battalion to move north in the early hours to Lakeside for possible enemy engagement. At 8am,under The Rising Sun, Scout Ryan Duncan was sent forward to gain information on the opposition awaiting in the hills at HPRW Headquarters. Scout Duncan reported back successfully and reported the enemy will be fierce coming from all different directions. As our Soldiers rolled over the frontline, it was Machine Gunner Joshua Watson who opened repetitive firing attacks on the hostile enemy as the "Tank" Daniel Rae made a good surprise advancement. Lance Corporal Bradley Rae wore honour and showed we were prepared to give all military style, and that the Goldstars Battalion Army had become stronger. Corporal Danica Kloppers was there to show that women can challenge the frontline too securing position on the previous Goldstar attacks and told awaiting soldiers we can continue advancing if we show aggression.

Then Jesse Rambo Kerrison was released into the battlefield on a rampage leaving nothing but total destruction to make the opposition re-think. Private Alex Kloppers from our infantry unit kept a close eye on Rambo Jesse for any possible ambush but luckily was able to return with Rambo Jesse, a job well done.

As the day warmed up immensely and the winds blew in, it was Private Amanda Hogan who found herself in a very close range battle to keep much needed advancement on our position returning showing exhaustion and saying lets finish them.

Now that the enemy had been softened, Major Darren Kerrison and Major Peter Duncan of artillery opened path for Caption John Muzarak to enter the heart of the battle field leaving all opposition desperately calling for air support. With only a small unit left to conquer, Sergent Bill Kloppers and Sergent Gary Wardrop delivered the final blow confidently riding like light horseman through the northern fields and erecting  the Goldstars flag for the final time.

As the dust settled it was the coffee van which came under attack allowing distraction for the Goldstars Battalion to pull out and make there journey home and plan thier next attack.

Boxing Day Recovery Ride
7:00am, December 26th 2008.
Against a backdrop of impending rain with dark clouds looming on the Southern horizon, 103 riders congregated at the Q Store in Mermaid Waters for the traditional Goldstars Boxing Day Recovery Ride out to the end of Currumbin Valley and back. Goldstars members, aged from 9 to 75, wore their Club strip in a show of Club solidarity while a bunch of visitors helped fill out the numbers on an alternately wet and dry road. Fortunately, the rain held off for the duration of the ride.
Club Captains, Tim and Luke, read the rules before the ride and controlled the bunch on the road ensuring the riders obeyed the road rules and offering suggestions to those riders who were not accustomed to riding in a large bunch.
Dave Costanza, Murwillumbah President, was there with a contingent of Murwillumbah members as was CATS Club Captain, Luke Lucas, with a bunch of CATS members along for the ride. Both expressed their admiration at the large numbers of  members the Goldstars are able to accumulate in one place all dressed in Club outfit.
By the time the bunch got to Burleigh, the numbers had swelled to over 120 on the road and had trouble getting through the green lights in one group.
At North Burleigh, Queensland Under 11 Track Rider of the Year, Daniel Rae, touched a wheel at the front end of the bunch and took a tumble, but was quickly back on his bike to resume the ride without any attendance from first aid in the support vehicles.
Most of the juniors stopped at the Rock Pools together with some parents while the bunch went on to the end of the valley where they turned and carved it up back to the Rock Pools where they stopped, re-organised and rode in an orderly fashion back to McDonalds at Mermaid Waters.
A few riders suffered punctures, both of tyres and egos, and were attended to by the two support vehicles which followed the bunch and ensured no one was left out on the road.
A good day for all who participated and an indicator of how strong the Goldstars has become.

Goldstars at Lake Taupo Challenge
4/12/2008 - Report from Kerrie Smith on Byron's pilgrimage to NZ:

Last weekend we flew the flag for Gold Coast Goldstars flying into to Auckland Friday and driving to Lake Taupo early Saturday morning for Byron to participate in the Wattyl Lake Taupo Challenge. Byron rode in Goldstars kit amongst 11,000 riders and one of approximately 250 Aussies. Byron says "it was an awesome ride with spectacular scenery and a very challenging course through the mountains".

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand's premier cycling event. Set in the picturesque Central North Island, the event offers riders the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of individual and team challenges based around a 160 km circumnavigation of Lake Taupo.

State Criterium Championships
Nundah 26th October 08
Full Results HERE
The Elite and Masters Criterium Champs were held at Nundah in windy conditions, and both Goldstars and local Gold Coast riders in general posting some good results, due in part, I believe, to the competitive race conditioning they had been getting from riding in the Rhino Linings Teams Series currently underway.

In Masters 9 Goldstars member, Werner Rogosinski took an easy Gold Medal while fellow Gold Coast locals, Freddie Mason and Ted Mathot took Silver and Bronze while Goldstar Ron Grant took Bronze in Masters 8.
Masters 5 was won by our Vice-President, Peter Flynn, with local Dave Boe, who is to become a Goldstar member for 2009, winning Silver.
Masters 4 saw Andre Clayden with a decent break on the field before being joined by Australian Champion, Craig Taylor from Ipswich, and taking Silver well clear of the field a wheel behind Craig.
Murwillumbah local, Dave Costanzo, took Bronze in Masters 3.

The Masters 2 event was hotly contested and was well won by local Gold Coast identity, Mark Brady, with one of our Committee members, John Murazak, taking a well deserved Bronze in that event.
Local and GD Investments rider, Kyle Bateson, took Bronze in Under 23.
Other Goldstars who rode and proudly showed the Club colours were Peter Duncan, Shane Foley, Greg Sands and Mike Jackson.

14-Oct-08. Returning to the Goldstars and to world class form, Julie Barnett has taken Gold and set a new world record in the Women's 45-49 time trial, 2008 UCI Masters Track World Championships, Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney.
Julie, a former Goldstars' member left the Club briefly to participate in the Broncos para-cycling program piloting a track tendem. She is back in the Club for 2009, and , hopefully, we will see her at the Club dinner on the 29th of November.

State Road Teams Time Trial - Laidley
Updated 1 Oct.
This year the Goldstars fielded only three teams which is a disappointing effort compared to previous years. However the teams that did make the pilgrimage to Laidley did the Club proud.
The Under 17 team of Hayden Roper, Nick Bell, Alex Kloppers and Gareth Daniel claimed Bronze as did our Masters 2-3 team of John Evangelista, Peter Roper, Peter Duncan and Darren Kerrison after the Ord Minnett team were disqualified for not completing the full course. Our Elite team of Mike Jackson, Craig Eather, Luke Clarkson and Sean Evangelista came fourth in a large field and were unlucky not to bring medals home.
We look forward to next year and entering tems in as many divisions as possible. Every one who went came home richer for the experience and with a story to tell.

Goldstars Juniors Strike Again
Australian Junior Road Championships
Jesse Kerrison and Emily Roper recently travelled to Canberra to contest the Australian Champs and test themselves against the best Under 15 riders from all States. Not Time Trial Specialists, they both place 4th in this event.
During the Road Race, Emily was forced to retire after another rider rode her front wheel into her rear derailleur and trashed it. Jesse won his Road Race to become the 2008 Under 15 Australian National Road Race Champion.
In the Criterium, Jesse, unfortunately, punctured in the final lap and was forced to retire.
Emily, however, finished 20 metres ahead of her nearest rival to become the 2008 Under 15 Women's Australian Criterium Champion.
Congratulations must go to these two youngsters for their dedication and focus and also to their families for their support and their Coach, Stan Brims for their preparation.
