JUNIORS TACKLE Mt WARNING
As a reward for training so hard for the recent QLD Teams time trial Mal thought it would be FUN to give the kids a weekend off riding and take them up Mount Warning. Kids and parents had a fantastic walk followed by somewhat of a wet BBQ. All in all a great day. As for EASY? I’m not so sure, all those that raced Sunday had sore legs, and that was before the race!
AUSTRALIAN U15 ROAD CHAMPS
From 1-4 September 2011 two of our junior stars Brad Soden and Josh Watson competed at the Australian Junior Road Championships in Victoria. The boys turned in solid performances across all the events (click here ). From all accounts, not only did the boys enjoy the racing but they had a fantastic time off the circuit as well. Check out Josh’s profile - some interesting stuff!!. Well done

QUEENSLAND JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2011
The Queensland Junior State Championship was held at Clifton over the 09/07/11 – 10/07/11. Clifton is small town situated between Warwick and Toowoomba. It was clear blue sky on both days; however, the early mornings were quite chilly, to the point of having frost on cars.
Individual Time Trials Saturday 9th July
- U9’s were off first, having a very cold start, for the time trial with our Goldstars Zak Patterson taking the gold medal and Byron Morgan silver. Tom Atkinson put in a great effort and rode strong.
-U11 boys were next to roll out. Kyle O’Brien taking the silver medal and Lachlan Devine bronze.
-In the U13 boys Will Atkinson and Mitchell Rae put in strong performances.
- Courtney Patterson rode well in U13 girls.
- U15 boys saw Josh Watson claim the bronze medal, with great rides by Reece Drury, Jak Love, Hugo Mayson, Daniel Rae and Brad Soden.
-U17 men both Bradley Rae and Joshua Smith rode very strong
All of these kids had a great time in the time trial
Road Race Saturday 9th July
The wind had picked up prior to the road race, making it that much harder. Thankfully the temperature had risen and it was a little warmer. The scene was set with all our riders ready to give their all in each event. All of our Goldstar riders dug in and performed well.
Congratulations to the following juniors who medalled in their events. U9 boys: Zak Patterson Gold, Byron Morgan Silver, U11 boys: Kyle O’Brien Silver Medal.
A special mention goes to Daniel Rae, who competed in the U/15 boys road race. At the completion of the event, officials in the spares vehicle commended Daniel for the sportsmanship he showed to a Toowoomba rider who lost his chain during the event. Daniel stopped to help the rider and then proceeded to pull him back to the main peloton. As much as winning medals it is displays like this that make us Goldstars proud.
Criterium Sunday 10th July
We thought Saturday was cold, I’m sure it was a few degrees lower for the start of the crit. At least the race was a little more sheltered as it coursed around the local shops.
-Again the U9 boys Zak Patterson and Byron Morgan did us proud taking gold and silver respectively.
- In the U11 boys we had a very excited Lachlan Devine leaping up to the podium to claim his gold medal. He jumped so high up to the stage, it is now being reported that athletic coaches are looking into him as a candidate for high jump. This was a boost for young Lachlan as he was very disappointed with his performance in the road race, feeling he had done too much work out front and not saved enough in reserve for the finish. It’s amazing how quickly kids learn by their mistakes.
- In the U15 boys Josh Watson was over the moon when he claimed silver. Amazingly he and another rider took the wrong corner for the first lap, upon realising the mistake they turned around, losing valuable places. Thankfully CQ was made aware of this and stopped all the riders on their third lap. On the restart, the two leaders were given a 50 meter buffer to the remaining riders. The main peloton had to work hard to pull back Jackson Carmen (Logan CC) and Brad Soden (Goldstar CC). Seeing the pack gaining Jackson put the foot down and was able to ride away and actually lap the field while the peloton caught Brad. With the peloton regrouping the race was now for second and third. Well done Josh for second place and Brad for third. A special mention here to Sharyn Cheetham, no one celebrates a victory like her. Hysterical with sheer happiness over her son Josh’s performance, some could get confused and think it was Sharyn who actually competed in the event.
Well done to each and every one of the Goldstar Juniors who competed in the State Championships. You all rode very well, displaying sportsmanship to not only your team mates but fellow competitors. You have done us all proud.

BOONAH JUNIOR TRAINING CAMP
Juniors from the Goldstars had a great time at a recent training camp at Boonah. Nearly 40 juniors and their parents made the Outlook at Boonah their base for the inaugural training camp in early June.
Whilst it was a bit chilly in the morning, everyone rugged up and took to the road each day. Many of our younger juniors did their longest ride ever on the Saturday with a few parents also setting new distance records. We used Mt Alford School as our base on the Saturday morning and then did an extra 30kms around Boonah on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday we rode out of Boonah and over the hills into Kalbar, where we all rode the 2010 Junior State course.
Special mention must go to Karen Love who suggested a road course for the Saturday which proved to be quite popular with the older junior riders…..but NOT their parents!!
Great effort from all our juniors and parents – special thanks to Mal Rae & Dave Gambrill for all their expertise out on the road.
Hope to see you all there at the next camp later in the year.
Cycling
Cycling is a great way to keep fit and healthy. Today I’m going to talk about my sport that I love. I belong to a club called the Goldstars I have being a member of this club for over two years and did my first championship ride last year. We have a lot of fun learning and riding together both Girls and Boys aged 6 to 17 years .
Cycling is not just about getting on your bike and riding around there is a lot more to it and this is where our training is important. We have training at Nerang on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Our coaches teach us to work as a team and ride safely together as a bunch, we also do skills, relays, time trials.
We also learn how to maintain our racing bikes, oiling and cleaning the chain making sure our brakes work properly and how to change a tyre this is all part of good safety for yourself and fellow riders. Club racing is on a Sunday and this is where we put our training to the test to see if we are improving our skills and times.
We have open races throughout the year as well against other clubs in Queensland. Part of this competition cycling is called a rollout, this means that certain ages can only pedal in a small gear. This allows your muscles to develop as you grow without doing any damage. This teaches you to pedal properly and to limit your energy use.
If you are a good rider on the day you may come away with a place. I hope you enjoyed learning a bit about cycling Today and go out and give it a try you will have a lot of fun. I sure do.
BAILEY DEAKIN
I am writing today to express my sincerest thanks to you for your junior coaching. Just over 7 months ago my son Bailey as part of his triathlon training decided to join the Goldstars Cycling Club after being referred to you by one of his friends at school. Bailey has absolutely fallen in love with cycling and enjoys coming to training each Tuesday and Thursday and participating in other regular races that have come up. As you are aware last weekend Bailey medalled at the State Junior Championships with 1 Silver and 2 bronze medals in the U11 category.
I want to convey to you as a parent that we believe the Goldstars Junior coaches (Gary, David and Mal) to be the most wonderful influence on our son. Your commitment to the development of the junior riders is amazing and to think you all volunteer your time to help our children – that is truly so very special. Over the years we have seen many types of coaches and knew instantly when we joined the Goldstars club that we had indeed become part of a very special and wonderful community. Your method of coaching and mentoring is so special that you incorporate fun for the kids whilst also allowing them to develop and become the best that they each individually can be. Our son Bailey has truly benefited from having you guys as his coach.
When we first started with Goldstars we were able to purchase Baileys first bike from you at an affordable price to ensure that our outlays were kept to a minimum whilst Bailey had time to learn and decide if Cycling was a sport he would enjoy. Well 7 months later he is truly hooked and we have recently purchased Bailey a new road bike which he absolutely loves.
As most people in life have said that the team or the environment is only as good as the people at the top of the ship. Well not only is the coaching by Gary, David and Mal amazing but this filters right through to each of the junior children in the club.
My husband and I were so proud to be associated with Goldstars on the weekend at the State Titles and watch with a genuine interest and passion the older riders in the club cheering Bailey on and giving him guidance on tactics where his own experience is limited to date. The kids all love what they are doing and are truly a wonderful bunch of kids. We are so happy that Bailey is involved with such an environment and a healthy lifestyle that cycling promotes.
Gary, David and Mal, thank you for the giving of your time so selflessly to coach and mentor these young children. Your coaching combination is a very special one and will only bring out the very best in each child in a truly unique way.
John, Bailey and myself look forward to many wonderful years ahead with our involvement with the Goldstars Cycling Club.
Thank you
Jodie Deakin
